Pope John 3, Princeton Day 2
Pope John opened the 2021-22 season in a big way as it took down NJ.com’s No. 9-ranked team at Princeton Day School, handing Princeton Day a loss in its first game as a member of the Gordon Conference.
Owen Lapinski and Emporio Iencio struck for two goals in a span of 18 seconds early in the second period to break a 1-1 tie for Pope John, which is coming off a 2-5-2 campaign last winter. Freshman Jack Jarosiewicz also scored for Pope John in the first period. In total, eight different players made their way onto the scoresheet for the Lions in a very balanced effort.
Tyler Paluzzi stopped 29 of 31 shots to backstop the Lions to the win.
Pope John will next take on Seton Hall Prep next Monday at 4 p.m. at Codey Arena.
Delbarton 4, Gloucester Catholic 2
Nick Faccone and Max Pendy each recorded two goals for Delbarton as it won its second-straight game to start the year and took down NJ.com’s No. 2-ranked team on the road.
Pendy gave the Green Wave the lead 1:48 into the game, and it remained 1-0 until late in the second period. Faccone scored with 4:34 left, before Pendy buried another just a minute later to make it a three-goal lead. Gloucester Catholic’s Billy Sheridan scored twice in the final 1:55 of the second to make it a 3-2 game, but Faccone got a big insurance goal in the third, assisted by Trip Pendy.
Delbarton has gotten off to a great start with wins in its first two Gordon Conference games after finishing 2-4-1 in the conference last year. It can move to 3-0 on Tuesday when it hosts St. Joseph of Montvale.
