MORRIS KNOLLS-HILLS 4, SUMMIT 2
Gehrig Eckoff scored twice and Jason Kwestel had a goal and three assists to lift Morris Knolls-Hills to a 4-2 win over Summit in its season-opener at Mennen Arena.
The game was a battle of two state champions from last season, as Summit claimed its third straight Public C title while Morris Knolls-Hills took Public A for the second straight year.
After a scoreless first period, Eckoff and Andrew Ryan scored to give Knolls-Hills (1-0) a two-goal edge. Summit’s Daniel Flaim cut the deficit with 2:22 to go, but Jason Kwestel restored the two-goal lead just 50 seconds later.
Flaim made it 3-2 early in the third, but Eckoff scored his second to help secure the victory for Knolls-Hills. Aidan Marvin made 32 saves in the win.
MOUNTAIN LAKES-BOONTON 5, MOUNT OLIVE-HOPATCONG-HACKETTSTOWN 2
Andy Barrasso scored twice as Mountain Lakes-Boonton used a big third period to take down Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown, 5-2, at Mennen Arena.
The score was knotted up at 2 going into the third period, when Barrasso put Mountain Lakes ahead with 6:55 to go off the rebound of an Aiden Reidy shot. Barrasso extended the lead to 4-2 late, before Cameron Egan capped the scoring in the final minute.
CHATHAM 6, KJS UNITED 2
Brandon Lupi and Declan Curry each scored twice to propel Chatham to a season-opening 6-2 win over KJS United at Mennen Arena.
Doyle Curry had a goal and two assists, while Ryan Sordillo contributed a goal and an assist for Chatham (1-0). Michael Park stopped 13 of 15 shots to earn the win.
Dillon Fleksher and James Battaglia each scored for KJS United. Brett Lewis made 50 saves in the loss.
