Jan. 31 recap: Morristown clinches state berth, Roxbury inches closer to Halvorsen title

Morristown 3, Oratory 1

Morristown topped Oratory, 3-1, to officially clinch a state tournament berth.

Jack McKenna scored twice for the Colonials, who upped their record to 9-8-4 in the team’s final regular season game before the state cutoff. Conor Critchley also scored, while Dylan Peck made 12 saves.

Morristown is locked into the fifth seed for the Mennen Cup, and it will face fourth seed Chatham in the first round at a date and time to be determined.

Roxbury 5, Kinnelon 1

Nick Hefferle scored twice to lift Roxbury to a 5-1 win over Kinnelon at Skylands Ice World.

Ethan Barooah added a goal and two assists for Roxbury (11-7-1), which can clinch first place in the Halvorsen Division with a win over Mendham today. It is tied for first place with Montville at 14 points with a game left, but Roxbury holds the win tiebreaker.

Brian Westergaard and Nick Thomas each scored for Roxbury, while Ryan Callahan made 18 saves. Tim Hausler scored the lone goal for Kinnelon (1-12-3).

Morris Knolls-Hills 1, Robbinsville-Allentown 0

Elliot Marken recorded a 24-save shutout to lift Morris Knolls-Hills to a 1-0 win on the road over Robbinsville-Allentown at Grundy Arena in Pennsylvania.

James Betz scored the lone goal for Morris Knolls-Hills (11-5-3), a shorthanded goal which came in the second period.

GIRLS

Kent Place 2, Chatham 1

Despite putting 56 shots on goal, Molly Coyne’s second period goal was all the offense Chatham could muster in a 2-1 loss to Kent Place at the Barnabas Health Hockey House in Newark.

The Cougars (4-7), fell behind 2-0 in the first period, before Coyne cut the deficit to one in the second. Cate Gallagher made 14 saves for Chatham, while Kent Place’s Noemi Martinez held Chatham to just one goal with an incredible 55-save performance.
