Jan. 2 Notebook: Morristown-Beard, led by Connor, rallies in 3rd to top Pope John

MONDAY, JANUARY 2

Casey Connor put together another big performance for Morristown-Beard, as he turned aside 44 of 45 shots to lead the Crimson, No. 6 in the Morris-Sussex Hockey Report Top 10, to a 2-1 win over No. 4 Pope John at Skylands Ice World in Stockholm.

David Koptyra put Pope John on the board in the first period, and it remained a 1-0 game until the third. Nick Squashic tied it up with under 10 minutes to go into the game, before Evan Jones buried a goal with 6:45 to go.

The win marked Morristown-Beard’s third-straight win to even up its record at 4-4. It also stopped Pope John’s four-game winning streak, which vaulted it to the No. 10 ranking in NJ.com’s statewide Top 20.
