Feb. 22 roundup: Vernon rallies late to advance

Christopher Gay scored the game-winning goal with 30 seconds left to propel 17th-seeded Vernon to a 7-6 win over 16th-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the play-in round of the NJSIAA Public B Tournament at Warinanco Skating Center in Roselle.

Vernon trailed, 6-4 with three minutes remaining before scoring three unanswered goals to pull out the victory. Lucas Brennan, Christopher Gay, and Dylan Shea each buried two goals, while Devin England had a short-handed goal in the win.

Vernon improved to 9-10 with the win, and advances to the first round of the Public B tournament. It will take on top-seeded Northern Highlands on either Thursday or Friday.

Marlboro-Holmdel 6, High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny 2
Luca Carnemolla and Gordon Shindelman each had a goal, but 23rd-seeded High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny lost, 6-2 to 10th-seeded Marlboro Holmdel in the NJSIAA Public C play-in round at Howell Ice World.

Tyler Boffa stopped 51 of 57 shots for High Point-Wallkill-Kittatinny, which finished the year 6-11-3.

Marlboro-Holmdel will advance to face seventh-seeded Robbinsville-Allentown on Friday in the first round.
