Christian Hertzig had a hat trick to lead eighth-seeded Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown to a 6-0 win over 25th-seeded Newton-Lenape Valley in the play-in round of the NJSIAA Public C tournament at Mennen Arena.
A.J. Twist had a goal and two assists for MO-HO-HA (17-4-3), which bounced back from its loss to West Morris in the Haas Cup final from last week in a big way. It led, 2-0 after two periods, before scoring four in the third to pull away. Frank Diloreto dished out two assists. Nick Gargiulo turned aside 18 shots to earn the shutout.
MO-HO-HA advances to the first round, where it will host tomorrow’s winner between ninth-seeded Colonia-Woodbridge-JFK and 24th-seeded Kearny-North Arlington-Secaucus. The date of that first round game is still to be determined.
Newton-Lenape Valley finished the year with an 8-11-5 record.
