Feb. 28 Morris-Sussex state tourney recap: Knolls-Hills, Randolph, Chatham earn shutouts

Chatham 2, Mahwah 0

Behind a 27-save performance from goalie Jennifer Olnowich, seventh seed Chatham earned a 2-0 win over 10th seed Mahwah in the NJSIAA Public C Tournament Round of 16 at Mennen Arena.

Will White put Chatham on the board 1:38 into the second period on a power play goal. Then, Ryan Sordillo scored the insurance goal late in the third, which was assisted by Danny Mahoney.

Chatham was out-shot, 27-18 by Mahwah in the game.

Chatham advanced to face the winner of second seed Lakeland and 15th seed Cranford in the quarterfinals.

Morris Knolls-Hills 5, Ocean Township-Shore 0

Top seed Morris Knolls-Hills began its state title defense with a 5-0 win over 16th seed Ocean Township-Shore in the NJSIAA Public A Tournament Round of 16 at Mennen Arena in Morris Township.

Jake DiLoreto scored twice for Morris Knolls-Hills, which advanced to the quarterfinals where it will take on ninth seed Marlboro-Holmdel on Monday at 5:45 p.m. at Mennen Arena. Timmy Kepler had a goal and an assist, while Andrew Ryan and Gavin Walsh each recorded a goal. Jason Kwestel dished out two assists.

Elliot Marken made 13 saves to secure the shutout.

Randolph 8, West Milford-Pequannock 0

Michael Sofia and Evan Xhumba each scored twice to lift top seed Randolph to an 8-0 win over 17th seed West Milford-Pequannock in the NJSIAA Public B Tournament Round of 16 at Aspen Ice in Randolph.

Kyle Barbera and Ben Yurchuk each had a goal and two assists for Randolph, which will face the winner of ninth seed Princeton and eight seed Southern in the quarterfinals. Ray McNamara dished out three assists, while Justin Harper and J.T. Zangara each scored a goal. Gavin Einfeldt made six saves to earn the shutout.

Don Bosco Prep 3, Pope John 1

Despite a 48-save performance from freshman Tyler Paluzzi, 15th seed Pope John fell to second seed Don Bosco, 3-1 in the NJSIAA Non-Public Tournament Round of 16 at the Ice Vault in Wayne.

Pope John was out-shot, 51-15 in the game, but Paluzzi kept his team in it even after surrendering a late goal in the first period. He kept it 1-0 until the third, when Pope John tied it up on Sawyer Tantleff’s goal early on. But Don Bosco struck for two goals in 20 seconds late in regulation to put away the victory, ending Pope John’s season.

GIRLS

Morristown-Beard 9, Immaculate Heart 0

Katie Ewig and Faith Facchini each scored twice to give top seed Morristown-Beard a 9-0 win over eighth seed Immaculate Heart in the quarterfinals of the State Invitational Tournament at Twin Oaks Ice Rink in Morristown.

It marked Morristown-Beard’s first win in the state tournament after a first round bye, in the inaugural season of this tournament.

Kaitlin Skorzewski had a goal and three assists for the Crimson, who advanced to face the winner of fifth seed Kent Place and fourth seed Oak Knoll in the semifinals on Monday. Lilli Warnock added a goal and an assist, while Abigail Russell had a goal and two assists.

Gracie Meyers stopped all 10 shots to earn the shutout.
