Feb. 13 cup recap: Madison stuns Knolls-Hills; Park, Vernon, Mendham advance

Mennen Cup: Madison 1, Morris Knolls-Hills 0

With the amount of talent that there is in the Mennen Division- one of the top divisions in the state- on a year-to-year basis, there’s always the potential for a surprising result.

Madison, the sixth seed, pulled off a stunning upset as it took down third seed Morris Knolls-Hills 1-0 in the first round of the Mennen Cup at Mennen Arena. Liam Fry scored the game-deciding goal with 10:16 left in the third period, assisted by Tyler Shannon.

Morris Knolls-Hills not only beat Madison by a combined score of 16-1 in both regular season meetings, but Madison entered this year’s Mennen Cup with a winless 0-9-1 record in the Mennen Division. But when it mattered most, Madison got outstanding goaltending from Keaton Tom, who made 43 saves to earn the shutout. In total, Madison was out-shot 43-21.

Madison, the defending champion, moves on to next Thursday’s semifinals, where it will take on second seed Randolph at 6:15 at Mennen Arena.

Haas Cup: Park Regional 7, Parsippany Regional 1

Ed Karpinski scored twice and had two assists to lift top seed Park Regional to a 7-1 win over eight seed Parsippany Regional in the first round of the Haas Cup at Mennen Arena.

Angelo DePinto added a goal and three assists for Park Regional, which advanced to next Wednesday’s semifinals against fourth seed Gill St. Bernard’s. Tyler Cross scored twice and had an assist, while Marco Demartinis and Joey Demartinis each had a goal and an assist. A.J. Schauder made 11 saves.

Justin Wellman made 73 saves for Parsippany Regional.

Halvorsen Cup: Vernon 6, Sparta-Jefferson 0

T.J. Santaita scored twice and had an assist to propel fourth seed Vernon to a 6-0 win over fifth seed Sparta-Jefferson at Skylands Ice World in the first round of the Halvorsen Cup.

Evan Steinbach had a goal and two assists and Ayden Steinbach dished out three assists for Vernon, which picked up its fourth win of the year over Sparta-Jefferson. Devan England had a goal and an assist, while Tyler Hamilton and Dylan Shea each added goals. Ozzie Deluca made 12 saves to earn the shutout.

Vernon advanced to next Wednesday’s semifinal, where it will take on top seed Roxbury at Mennen Arena at 7:30.

Halvorsen Cup: Mendham 6, Kinnelon 0

Ryan Bruin collected three goals and two assists to lift third seed Mendham to a 6-0 win over sixth seed Kinnelon in the first round of the Halvorsen Cup at Mennen Arena.

Tristan Aikenhead and Liam Lloyd each had a goal and three assists for Mendham, which moved on to the semifinals on Thursday where it will take on second seed Montville at 4:15 at Mennen Arena.

Connor McDonough made 12 saves to secure the shutout.
