Dec. 19 recap: Morristown-Beard stuns Bergen Catholic

Morristown-Beard, which had been on a nice roll lately, put its four-game winning streak to the test on Thursday night when it took on Bergen Catholic, which just became the state’s No. 1 team in’s statewide Top 20.

And with that type of challenge came opportunity, and Morristown-Beard took full advantage of it. The Crimson scored three times in the third to break a deadlock and earn its signature win of the early season, a 5-2 win over Bergen Catholic at Mennen Arena.

The win marked Morristown-Beard’s fifth consecutive win to the year after an 0-2 start.

Hollis Humphreis scored midway through the third to break the tie, before Tommy Matthews and Seth Kaplan scored key insurance goals late. Kaplan finished with two goals, while Matthews and Cam Fernandez each had a goal and two assists. Andrew Low and Billy Moloney each dished out two assists.

Luke McManus made 23 saves to secure the win, as Morristown-Beard out-shot Bergen Catholic, 28-25.

Morris Knolls-Hills 3, Lakeland 3

Derek Coleman’s goal with 1:23 remaining in regulation helped Morris Knolls-Hills secure its second-consecutive tie, this time a 3-3 deadlock with Lakeland in the Ice Vault Holiday Classic at the Ice Vault in Wayne.

Jason Kwestel and Jake DiLoreto each scored for Morris Knolls in a back-and-forth game which saw the teams trade goals, up until Lakeland’s Joey Cole scored a go-ahead goal with over five minutes left late in the third period to put Morris Knolls on the ropes.

Elliot Marken made 20 saves for Morris Knolls, which will face Morristown at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Mennen Arena.

Morris Knolls is now 2-2-2 through six games.

Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown 5, Parsippany Regional 0

Thomas Cioce had a hat trick to lead Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown to a commanding 5-0 win over Parsippany Regional at Mennen Arena.

Evan Parr had a goal and an assist, while Christian Herzig also scored for Mount Olive (4-1-1). Nicholas Cioce dished out two assists, and Zach Bahammou made six saves to secure the shutout.

Justin Wellman made 36 saves for Parsippany Regional (0-5).
