Dec. 11 recap: Randolph, Morristown-Beard make statements

Randolph 6, St. John Vianney 2

Randolph came into the 2019-20 season considered as perhaps the top public school in the state. It furthered that argument on Wednesday, as it knocked off Non-Public power St. John Vianney, which is ranked No. 10 in the state according to NJ.com, by a score of 6-2 at Aspen Ice in Randolph.

Matt Rogers and Ben Yurchuk each scored twice. Michael Sofia had a goal and an assist, while J.T. Zangara dished out three assists. Justin Harper and Evan Xhumba each had two helpers. Gavin Einfeldt turned aside 20 of the 22 shots he faced to improve Randolph’s record to a perfect 4-0.

Zach Gallo also scored in the win.

Morristown-Beard 8, Princeton Day 3

Morristown-Beard earned perhaps its most impressive win of the young season, as it netted eight goals in a dominant 8-3 win over Princeton Day at Lisa McGraw Rink in Princeton.

Seth Kaplan had a hat trick and Nick Vantassell chipped in with four assists for the Crimson (2-2). Hollis Humphries and Tommy Matthews each recorded a goal and two assists, and D.J. Layden added a goal and an assist in the win.

Chili Connell made 34 saves for Morristown-Beard, which was out-shot 37-32.

Mountain Lakes-Boonton 2, Gill St. Bernard’s 2

Griffin O’Shaughnessy’s power play goal with nine seconds remaining in the game helped Mountain Lakes-Boonton earn a dramatic 2-2 tie with Gill St. Bernard’s at Mennen Arena.

O’Shaughnessy struck twice for Mountain Lakes (3-0-1), including the game’s opening goal in the first period. Brenen Lavoie and Liam Jones each scored for Gill St. Bernard’s (1-2-1) in the second period.

Sparta-Jefferson 3, Mendham 3

Kyle Sutton scored twice, including the game-tying goal in the third period, to help Sparta-Jefferson erase a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 tie with Mendham at Mennen Arena.

Josh Harmel also scored for Sparta-Jefferson, as his goal early in the third period cut the deficit to two. Ryan Bruin scored twice for Mendham, while Mac Goggin also scored.

Logan Hanek made 35 saves for Sparta-Jefferson, which was out-shot 38-17 in the contest.

GIRLS

Morristown-Beard 2, Hoosac (N.Y.) 1

Logan Sutera and Kaitlin Skorzewski each scored for Morristown-Beard in a 2-1 victory over Hoosac School (N.Y.).

Faith Facchini, Leah Stecker, Logan Sutera, and Alexa Degan each had an assist. Sasha Berniker made 11 saves for the Crimson (3-0-1).
