Morris Knolls-Hills 6, Morristown-Beard 1
Morris Knolls (1-1) bounced back from a tough season-opening loss as well as it could, as it used a four-goal second period to take control in its Mennen Division opener against Morristown-Beard at Mennen Arena.
Jason Kwestal recorded a hat trick for the Golden Eagles, including the go-ahead goal 3:42 into the second period. Andrew Ryan (who also had four assists), Gehrig Eckoff, and Jake Quinn each scored in the win. Elliot Marken stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
It was Morristown-Beard’s second straight loss to open the season in the division. D.J. Layden scored the lone goal for the Crimson, which opened the scoring 17 seconds into the second period.
Montville 6, Kinnelon 4
Thanks to a hat trick from Daniel Scheine, Montville secured its first win of the year, a 6-4 triumph over reigning Halvorsen Cup champion Kinnelon at Skylands Ice World.
Brendan Perretta and Joe Nuzzi each added goals for Montville, which upped its record to 1-0-1 after a 2-2 tie with Sparta-Jefferson to open the season.
Notre Dame 4, Pope John 2
Pope John dropped its first game of the season on Friday night, as it fell 4-2 to Notre Dame of the Colonial Valley Conference at Skylands Ice World.
The Lions will be back in action on Monday when it travels to face Bergen Catholic at 3 p.m.
