Pope John senior goalie Matt Schoer (Gordon Conference) and Vernon senior defenseman Jack Bokun (MCSSIHL) were picked as New Jersey Devils Players of the Month for December.
These two players from the Morris-Sussex Hockey Report area are two of eight total players that were honored by the Devils for December. This marks the 27th season of the Devils’ High School Player of the Month program. The selections are made by members of the media who cover high school hockey throughout the state.
Each winner receives tickets to a Devils game, along with a certificate that is presented to them by a Devils player.
Schoer, who is in his fourth year as Pope John’s starting netminder, posted four shutouts in the month of December and finished with a 6-1-1 record. He finished with an impressive .942 save percentage in those starts, which included wins over Hunterdon Central, Chatham, Bishop Eustace and Notre Dame, along with an impressive 28-save performance in a 2-2 tie with Delbarton.
Bokun has been Vernon’s leading scorer this season while handling big minutes playing on the blue line. In December, he tallied 11 goals and 11 assists for a total of 22 points. He was involved in all four of his team’s goals in a big 4-0 win over Montville (2 g., 2 a.), and scored the game-winner with over four minutes left in the team’s big comeback win over Kinnelon on Dec. 21. He also helped his team three-peat as Sussex Cup champions when scored twice and had an assist in a 5-0 win over High Point-Wallkill Valley in the championship game.
