Morris/Sussex Three Stars of the Week for Dec. 8

By Mike Gurnis

Here are my picks for this week’s Morris-Sussex Hockey Report Three Stars, which are for games played through Sunday, Dec. 7.

Cormac Gibbons, KJS United, Sr., F
With the team’s star player in Braydon Sisco being unavailable due to being called up to the USHL’s Tri-City Storm, it was unclear who would step up for KJS United. The answer, it turns out, was everyone, and Gibbons led the way with a hat trick and an assist as KJS United opened the season with a statement 8-6 win over Randolph on Friday.

Rhone Armijo, West Morris, Jr., F
Armijo’s shorthanded goal with 3:34 remaining in regulation gave the Wolfpack the lead for good, as it erased a 5-3 deficit with three unanswered in the third period to take home a 6-5 win over Madison. It capped off a two-goal, two-assist night for the junior, who followed it up with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win over Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown on Saturday.

Joshua Henderson, Vernon, So., F
The sophomore recorded just three assists in his freshman campaign, and came through in a big way for his team in its season-opener on Saturday night. He scored two goals, including the game-tying goal with two seconds left to help the Vikings earn a 2-2 tie with Morris Catholic-St. Elizabeth-Newark Academy.
