Morristown-Beard shuts out Bergen Catholic again
For the second time this season, Morristown-Beard shut out Bergen Catholic.
The seventh-seeded Crimson earned a 3-0 win over 10th-seeded Bergen Catholic in the first round of the Non-Public tournament at Twin Oaks Ice Rink in Morristown.
It previously knocked off the Crusaders, 2-0 on Dec. 27.
Alex Hriczov had a goal and two assists for Morristown-Beard (19-2-1), which won its 10th-consecutive game. The Crimson scored three times on the power play, with Evan Jones giving his team the lead in the second period. Then, Hriczov and Trenton Fei each scored in the third to put the game away.
Morristown-Beard will move on to the quarterfinals where it will travel to face second-seeded Christian Brothers on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jersey Shore Arena.
Delbarton rolls into quarterfinals
Twelve different players found their way onto the scoresheet as top-seeded Delbarton rolled to a 10-0 win over 16th-seeded Notre Dame in the first round of the Non-Public tournament at SportsCare Arena.
Aidan Pasic led the way with five assists and Dante Rodriguez had a hat trick for Delbarton. Sean O’Gwen had a goal and three assists, and Ayden Puppe and Jack Ross each contributed a goal and two assists in the win.
Delbarton (19-1-1) will face eighth-seeded Seton Hall Prep in the quarterfinals later this week.
Pope John’s season ends in first round
Despite holding a one-goal lead in the second period, ninth-seeded Pope John was unable to hold it as it fell, 5-2 to eighth-seeded Seton Hall Prep in the first round of the Non-Public tournament at Codey Arena.
In a back-and-forth second period, Pope John led, 2-1 midway through the period. But the Lions surrendered three goals before the end of the period, before the Pirates added another in the third to seal the win.
Pope John’s season ended at 14-6-1.
Madison girls lose heartbreaker
The ninth-seeded Madison girls team saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, as it surrendered the tie-breaking goal with a minute remaining in regulation as it fell, 2-1, to eighth-seeded Summit in the first round of the Girls state tournament at Warinanco Skating Center.
Brooke Gundlach scored the tying goal for the Dodgers early in the second period. But Summit’s Kennedy Sears buried the game-winner with exactly one minute remaining, and the Hilltoppers advanced to the quarterfinals.
Madison goalie Clementine Dickson-Child was excellent in defeat, stopping 37 of 39 shots, as the Dodgers were out-shot, 39-9.
Madison, which won the Annis Cup title this season, ends its season with a 10-2 record.
