Montville plays spoiler in win over Gill St. Bernard’s
Logan Engle scored twice with an assist to lead Montville to a 5-1 win over Gill St. Bernard’s in the Halvorsen Division regular season finale at Mennen Arena.
Montville, which had already clinched the fifth seed in the Halvorsen Cup, eliminated Gill St. Bernard’s from contention and the result clinched a Cup spot for Madison.
Cole Riley scored twice for Montville, which improved to 6-10-1 and can look forward to a match-up with fourth-seeded Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown in the first round on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Mennen Arena. Marco Van De Graaf had three assists and Nicolas Ponikowski scored once with an assist. Dylan Hunter made 19 saves in the win.
Michael Tighe scored the lone goal for Gill St. Bernard’s, which fell to 2-11 overall. Luc Jansson made 40 saves in the loss.
NJIIHL Gordon Cup as well as Girls Cups seeds finalized
The NJIIHL seeded its tournaments on Monday, and there will be a lot of Morris/Sussex teams involved.
We’ll start with the prestigious Gordon Cup, where Delbarton, the top team in the state according to NJ.com and Big State Sports, is the top seed, as expected. It will face eighth-seeded Seton Hall Prep in the first round on Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. at SportsCare Arena. It will go for its second Gordon Cup title in three seasons. The other Morris/Sussex area Gordon Conference participant, Pope John, did not qualify for the tournament.
The Gordon Cup final is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Codey Arena.
On the girls side, Morristown-Beard will have its sights set on its second Librera Cup title in three years. It is the second seed and earned a bye into the semifinals, where it will host third-seeded Princeton Day on Friday at 4:45 p.m. at Twin Oaks Ice Rink. The final will be next Thursday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. at Codey Arena.
In the Cohen Cup, Chatham-Millburn earned the third seed and will travel to face second-seeded Trinity Hall on Friday. Should it reach the final, it will be Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at Codey Arena.
As for the Annis Division, there will be two area participants, starting with Madison, which earned the top seed and a bye into the semifinals. It will host the winner of fifth-seeded Newark East Side and fourth-seed Princeton on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at American Dream Mall. Randolph, on the other hand, earned the third seed and will face second-seeded Cranford in the semifinals on Tuesday. Should either or both teams reach the championship, it will be Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. at Codey Arena.
Jasaitis leads Morristown-Beard girls past Westfield
Julie Jasaitis had three goals in an assist to lead the Morristown-Beard girls to a 6-1 win over Westfield at Twin Oaks Ice Rink.
Morristown-Beard extended its unbeaten streak to eight (7-0-1) and is now 7-3-2 on the year. Reid Snyder and Emma Fuchs each had a goal and two assists, while Marilee Vartanian dished out two assists. Sylie Sawale also scored.
Hannah Mortazavi made 16 saves for the Crimson.
Bland leads Parsippany to big road win
Kaden Bland had a hat trick, including the game-winning goal, to lead Parsippany Regional to a 4-3 win over Bayonne-Belleville-McNair at Korpi Ice Rink in Bayonne.
Andrew Nicholas made 47 saves as Parsippany improved its record to 10-6. It trailed, 3-1, before Bland scored shorthanded in the second period, and Max Ingersoll scored in the third to tie it up prior to the go-ahead goal.
