Madison rallies for tie with Montville; Montville clinches Halvorsen Cup spot
Madison erased a three-goal first period deficit with three unanswered goals to secure a 3-3 tie with Montville in Halvorsen Division play at Mennen Arena.
However, the point clinched a Halvorsen Cup playoff berth for Montville. It was also an important point for Madison, which now trails Gill St. Bernard’s by one point for the final playoff spot, going into Sunday’s meeting with the Knights. If Madison wins that game, and if Montville beats Gill St. Bernard’s in regulation on Monday, Madison would clinch the final Halvorsen Cup playoff spot.
Cole Riley, Logan Engle, and Kaden Clifton each scored in the first period to give Montville a commanding 3-0 lead. But Lucas Gero and Chris Palawasta scored in the second period for Madison, before Gero added a clutch power play goal with 1:09 left in regulation to tie the game and force overtime.
Thanks to an impressive performance from Madison goalie Nicky Worthington (49 saves), it was able to come from behind and earn a big standings point with the tie. Patrick Layng and Ryan McSherry each had two assists for the Dodgers (3-15-1, 1-9-1).
Dylan Hunter made 31 saves for Montville (5-10-1, 3-7-1).
Sisco’s 5-goal performance lifts KJS United
Braydon Sisco scored five of his team’s six goals in a 6-0 win over Bernards-Somerville-Middlesex in Mennen Division play at Skylands Ice World.
The win clinched the third seed for KJS United (9-6-1, 6-5-1) in the Mennen Cup, and it will likely face sixth-seeded Morristown in the first round on Monday (pending official confirmation from the MCSSIHL).
Jake Prunty had a goal and four assists for KJS, while Brian Sisti made 15 saves and Andrew Corrado stopped 11 in a combined shutout effort.
Bernards-Somerville-Middlesex fell to 0-14-1 and 0-12 in the Mennen Division.
Randolph’s 10-game win streak snapped by Ridge
Despite two goals and an assist from Shane Melly, Randolph saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Ridge in a 4-3 defeat at SportsCare Arena.
It was Randolph’s (14-4) first loss in over a calendar month, dating back to a 5-0 loss to Northern Highlands on Dec. 29. It will be back in action tomorrow when it faces Morris Knolls-Hills in its Mennen Division finale at Mennen Arena.
Madison girls take down Randolph at the Rock
Leah Jobe scored twice with an assist to lead the Madison girls to a 3-1 win over Randolph at Newark’s Prudential Center.
Brooke Gundlach also scored for Madison, which improved to 8-1 overall and finished Annis Division play with a perfect 8-0 record. Clementine Dickson-Child made 20 saves in the win.
Charna Torres scored the lone goal for Randolph, which fell to 3-9-1 overall with a 3-4-1 Annis record.
