Jan. 8 recap: Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown’s defense shines in win

Muscolino, Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown defense shine
Talon Muscolino stopped all 16 shots he faced to help Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown earn a 1-0 win over Montville in Halvorsen Division play at Mennen Arena.

The Mount Olive tri-op jumped on top late in the first period on a goal from Andrew Scelfo, which was his first of the season. From that point on, Mo-Ho-Ha smothered Montville defensively, as it out-shot it 40-16 in the game and provided virtually zero space as it attempted to break out through the neutral zone.

Montville goalie Dylan Hunter played admirable in the loss, stopping 39 of 40 shots.

The win moved Mo-Ho-Ha into a tie for third place in the division with Whippany Park, as each team has seven points through six games. It is 5-5-1 overall and will face Mendham on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.

Gill St. Bernard’s earns first win behind Jansson
Luc Jansson made 48 saves to lift Gill St. Bernard’s to its first win of the year, a 3-0 win over Madison in Halvorsen Division play at Mennen Arena.

It was a big win for Gill St. Bernard’s, as it also earned its first divisional win and, at least for now, moved ahead of Madison for the final Halvorsen Cup playoff spot. There are still six divisional games left but nonetheless, a big step for the Knights, who have been competitive throughout the season despite only having eight skaters available.

Michael Tighe scored twice for Gill St. Bernards’ (1-6, 1-5 division). Brendan Binder had a goal and an assist, while Michael Nehmer and Gabe Raphel each had two assists.

Madison fell to 2-11 overall with a 1-5 Halvorsen record. Madison will face West Morris on Monday, while Gill St. Bernard’s will take on Park Regional on Monday.

Mountain Lakes-Boonton ends five-game losing streak
Lawson Fagan had three goals and three assists for Mountain Lakes-Boonton in a 10-3 win over Vernon in Haas-Charette Division play at Mennen Arena.

Kyle Wenzel had two goals and four assists for Mountain Lakes-Boonton, which snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 2-6 with a 2-3 divisional record. Eli Forman scored twice with an assist, while Scott Soukup had two assists and Colin Barrasso had a goal and an assist. Ethan Scanlon made six saves in the win.

Jake Chromcik had a hat trick for Vernon, which dropped to 0-9 with an 0-5 mark in the Haas-Charette Division. Klaus Harthaus made 60 saves in the loss.

Mountain Lakes-Boonton will face High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny on Saturday, while Vernon is set to take on Newark East Side on Thursday.

Randolph stays hot with emphatic win over Pingry
Ryan Thomas had a goal and three assists to lift Randolph to an 8-0 win over Skyland Conference power Pingry at SportsCare Arena.

Randolph (7-3) won its third-straight game and has won four of its last five games. It will face Morristown on Saturday when it resumes Mennen Division play.

Jase Zangara and Shane Melly each had two goals and an assist for Randolph. Andrew George had three assists, while Keegan Melly and Vincent Crisafulli each had a goal and an assist. Quincy Mitchell made 18 saves to earn his second shutout in just four starts this year.

Morristown snaps long skid
Morristown snapped a six-game winless streak with a 4-1 win over Colonia-Woodbridge-Iselin Kennedy at Woodbridge Community Center.

Lucas Gervasio, Noel Gaynor, Andrew Summa, and Brady Mulligan each found the back of the net for Morristown (3-7-1). Artie Conover made 20 saves in the win.

Morristown will next face Randolph on Saturday.

Pope John’s six-game win streak snapped by Seton Hall Prep
Ryan Murray scored two goals to lead Seton Hall Prep to a 6-2 win over Pope John at Skylands Ice World.

Pope John (9-3-1) saw its six-game winning streak snapped. Sean Hughes and Jack Jarosiewicz each scored in he loss.

It will next face Gloucester Catholic on Friday.
