Delbarton’s Shatel becomes 5th member of N.J. hockey 500-win club

Thanks to Delbarton’s 4-0 win over Catholic Memorial of Massachusetts in the William Hanson Invitational in Boston, Delbarton coach Bruce Shatel became the latest member of the 500-win club.

Shatel now owns a career record of 500-89-46 over 24 seasons coaching the Green Wave. He’s the fifth member of New Jersey’s 500-win club, and became the second coach in the last calendar year to join the club, after Randolph’s Rich McLaughlin earned his milestone win on Jan. 31.

Shatel joins McLaughlin, Brick Township’s Bob Auriemma, Chatham’s Harvey Cohen, and Seton Hall Prep’s John Warchol as members of the 500 win club.

He doubles as Delbarton’s baseball coach as well, and this past spring he earned his 900th career win combined between hockey and baseball. Between baseball and hockey, he’s coached future pros such as Anthony Volpe of the New York Yankees, Jack Leiter of the Texas Rangers, along with Kenny Agostino who played in the N.H.L. for multiple teams.

He’s led Delbarton to 11 state titles in ice hockey, most recently in 2018. He also has won two state titles in baseball.

So far this season, Delbarton is off to a 5-0-1 start, with its last two wins accounting for a sweep in the William Hanson Invitational, which was held at Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, Mass. In Saturday’s milestone win, it was Egor Andreev who led the way with a hat trick, while Jack Ross also found the back of the net.

Delbarton will be back in action on Jan. 7 when it resumes Gordon Conference play with a home game against Don Bosco Prep.
