Dec. 7 recap: West Morris rallies, Roxbury triumphs

West Morris 5, Montville 2
Layton Cummings scored a natural hat-trick to help West Morris erase a two-goal deficit in a 5-2 win over Montville in Halvorsen Division play at Mennen Arena.

Montville built a two-goal first period lead thanks to goals from Kaden Clifton and Cole Riley. But Cummings buried a power play goal with under six minutes to go in the second, before scoring twice in a span of 1:20 early in the third period to give the Wolfpack (2-0) the lead for good. Rhone Armijo scored a shorthanded goal for a key insurance marker, before Ben Barnhill finished it off with a power play goal late.

Cummings finished with three goals and an assist, while Armijo had a goal and three assists. Jason Trezza stopped 27 shots in the win. West Morris will next face reigning Public state champion Northern Highlands on Tuesday.

Dylan Hunter made 17 saves for Montville (0-1). It will continue Halvorsen Division play on Monday when it takes on Park Regional.

Roxbury 5, Gill St. Bernard’s 3
In Roxbury’s first game since the tragic passing of former player Gavin Barooah nine days earlier, the Gaels emerged victorious with a 5-3 win over Gill St. Bernard’s at SportsCare Arena.

Roxbury (1-0) built a three-goal cushion in the first period thanks to goals from Griffin Warsaw (twice) and Ryan VanZile. But Gill St. Bernard’s kept things interesting, as Brendan Whiteley scored twice and Michael Tighe also scored, and it was able to close the deficit to 4-3 in the third period. But Chase Alven sealed it with a goal with 2:24 left.

Warsaw had two goals and an assist, while VanZile had a goal and three assists. Mikey Guadagnino made 13 saves for his first win of the year. Roxbury will next face High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny on Monday night at 8:15 p.m. at Mennen in its first Haas-Charette Division game.

Tighe finished with a goal and two assists for Gill St. Bernard’s (0-1). Luc Jansson made 39 saves in the loss. It will next face Mount Olive-Hopatcong-Hackettstown on Monday at 6:15 p.m. at Mennen Arena.

Randolph 6, Morristown 1
Randolph built a three-goal lead in the first period and never looked back in a 6-1 win over Morristown to open Mennen Division play at Mennen Arena.

Shane Melly, Keegan Melly, and Jack Murphy all scored in the first period to give the Rams (1-0) the commanding three-goal lead. Morristown’s Luke Williams struck with a power play goal in the second period to cut it to 3-1, but Shane Melly, Andrew George, and Jase Zangara all scored in the third to put it away.

Shane Melly finished with two goals and an assist and Keegan Melly had a goal and two assists. Vincent Crisafulli dished out three assists, and freshman Zack Levesque stopped 10 of 11 shots to earn his first win. Randolph will next face Chatham on Thursday.

Artie Conover made 36 saves for Morristown (0-1), which will continue Mennen play on Tuesday when it takes on Chatham.

Mountain Lakes-Boonton 4, Morris Catholic-St. Elizabeth’s-Newark Academy 1
Lawson Fagan and Andrew Wilmot each scored a goal with an assist in Mountain Lakes-Boonton’s 4-1 win over the Morris Catholic tri-op at Mennen Arena.

Eli Forman and Kyle Wenzel each scored for Mountain Lakes-Boonton (1-1), while Cody Roller made nine saves. Ryan Keller scored the lone goal for the Morris Catholic tri-op (0-1), with Joey Rubino making 27 saves in the loss.

Mountain Lakes-Boonton will face Newton-Lenape Valley on Saturday, while Morris Catholic-St. Elizabeth-Newark Academy will take on Parsippany Regional on Wednesday.

Parsippany Regional 9, Vernon 1
Robert Hemenway scored four goals to lead Parsippany Regional to its first win of the season, a Haas-Charette Division win over Vernon, 9-1 at Skylands Ice World.

Parker Enslow and Kaden Bland each recorded a goal and two assists, while Matthew Hemenway dished out three assists for Parsippany (1-0). Michael Rescigno added a goal and an assist and Evan Carlson contributed two assists in the win. Andrew Nicholas stopped 18 of 19 shots.

Parsippany will next face Morris Catholic-St. Elizabeth’s-Newark Academy on Wednesday.

Jake Chromcik scored the lone goal for Vernon. Freshman goalie Klaus Harthaus stopped 64 of 73 shots, as Parsippany out-shot Vernon, 73-19 in the game. It will take on Bayonne on Monday.

Paramus Catholic 8, High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny 5
Anthony Tokar had three goals for High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny in an 8-5 loss to Paramus Catholic at Skylands Ice World.

Brady Reid had four assists for the High Point tri-op (0-1), while Alex Sonvico scored twice. It will next face Roxbury on Monday at Mennen Arena.
