The New Jersey Devils announced its selections for February’s Players of the Month across the state of New Jersey, and there were three players from the Morris/Sussex area honored.
Delbarton’s Max Pendy (Gordon Conference), Randolph’s Jase Zangara (MCSSIHL), and Morristown-Beard (Girls) Jessica Sperling were all named Players of the Month for their respective conferences.
They were joined by junior forward Michael Ferrante (Fair Lawn-Bergenfield-Dumont, Big North, senior forward Charlie Luizza (Robbinsville-Allentown, Colonial Valley Conference), senior forward Ryan Lukko (Woodbridge-Colonia-Iselin Kennedy, Greater Middlesex Conference), senior forward Parker Dupuis (Glen Rock, NJIIHL), junior forward Andrew Buda (Southern, Shore Conference), and senior forward Robert Turnbull (Hunterdon Central, Skyland Conference).
Pendy has had an outstanding season for Delbarton, with 25 goals and 25 assists to his name in leading the Green Wave to the second seed in the NJSIAA Non-Public state tournament. In February alone, he has had four goals and 10 assists to his name over five games. Zangara, on the other hand, has been a key cog in Randolph’s undefeated season, with an impressive 35 goals and 32 assists this year. He helped lead the Rams to the Mennen Cup title in February, and in total, had 11 goals and 10 assists over five games this month.
Sperling has 29 goals and 20 assists for the Morristown-Beard girls squad, which earned the top seed in the NJSIAA state tournament. She had seven goals and three assists over four games in February.
Each winner is based off nominations received from members of the media across the state that cover high school hockey. Award recipients and their guests receive tickets to a Devils home game and a certificate presented by a Devils player and RWJ Barnabas Health representative.
