Jan. 24 Notebook: NLV’s Sevean, Morristown-Beard’s Driver reach coaching milestones

COACHING MILESTONES ACROSS THE AREA

There have been multiple coaching milestones reached in the area this week, with one inching closer.

On Monday night, Newton-Lenape Valley’s Ryan Sevean picked up the 200th win of his coaching career in his team’s 7-5 win over Millburn. The 200 wins came between West Milford and Newton-Lenape Valley, with 190 coming with his current program. Brayden Dabrowski scored four goals with an assist, and Maksym Pastukh tallied two goals and five assists in the win for NLV (9-5).

Then, on Wednesday, Morristown-Beard girls coach Bruce Driver picked up the 350th win of his coaching career in his team’s 5-3 win over Hoosac (N.Y.). Over 24 seasons, he has a 350-89-23 career record, and is the fifth active coach- between boys and girls- to reach the 350-win milestone. Jessica Sperling had a hat trick and an assist, while Julie Jasaitis added a goal and two assists as the Crimson improved to 9-2 on the season.

Randolph’s Rich McLaughlin is also closing in on a major milestone. He stands just three wins away from 500 career wins after his team’s 3-1 win over Morristown on Wednesday. The team’s next three games are against Hunterdon Central (Friday), Morris Knolls-Hills (Monday), and Ramapo (Wednesday), so the earliest he could hit the milestone is next Wednesday.

In the team’s win over Morristown, Daniel Sharkey scored twice, with Jacob Campbell also scoring. The win improved Randolph to 13-0-1- the only unbeaten team remaining in the state- and improved its Mennen Division record to 6-0. It is now guaranteed to finish no worse than tied for the top seed in the Mennen Cup, and can clinch the regular season division title and top seed with a win or tie against Morris Knolls-Hills on Monday.

CHARETTE CUP FIELD SET WITH PARSIPPANY WIN

With Parsippany Regional’s 8-0 win over Morris Catholic-St. Elizabeth, we now know who the four teams in the Charette Cup will be.

The result officially eliminated Morris Catholic-St. Elizabeth from contention, meaning that Vernon clinched a berth for the tournament. There is still much to be sorted out for seeding, but Newton-Lenape Valley, High Point-Wallkill Valley-Kittatinny, Parsippany Regional, and Vernon will be the four teams competing in the Charette Cup.

Robert Hemenway scored four times with two assists for Parsippany, which improved to 4-3 in the division and 5-6 overall with its third-consecutive victory. A win over High Point on Saturday in its final divisional game would guarantee it finishes no worse than the third seed, with Vernon fourth.

Sean Coyle and Nicholas Hornung each had a goal and an assist, with Matthew Hemenway dishing out three assists. Andrew Nicholas stopped all 19 shots to earn his first career shutout.
