PARK REGIONAL DOWNS MOUNTAIN LAKES ON LATE GOAL FROM CAPOZZI
Michael Capozzi’s shorthanded goal late in the third period lifted Park Regional to a big 1-0 win over Mountain Lakes-Boonton in a Haas Division tilt at Mennen Arena.
Park Regional’s defense held Mountain Lakes-Boonton to just 12 shots, and Dylan Marion stopped them all to record his first career shutout. It was the team’s third win in a row, which improved its overall record to 8-5 and its Haas record to 4-3. It is closing in on a Haas Cup berth, which it can accomplish- most simply- with a win in one of its final three divisional games and a loss by Mountain Lakes-Boonton.
Cody Roller stopped 24 of 25 shots for Mountain Lakes-Boonton, which fell to 3-8 overall with a 1-5 Haas record. With four games in the division left, Mountain Lakes will most likely need to win out and get help in the process in order to qualify for the Haas Cup.
The result eliminated Roxbury from Haas Cup playoff contention, as it has three points in eight divisional games, and with two games left, it cannot catch Park Regional, which is in the fourth and final spot with eight points.
PIECHNIK’S OT WINNER LIFTS MADISON
Kyle Piechnik scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel Madison to a 5-4 win over Bernards-Somerville-Middlesex in a Halvorsen Division game at Mennen Arena.
The teams traded goals through most of regulation, but Madison held a 4-3 lead in the third thanks to a third-period goal from Sam Gero. But BSM’s Thomas Diemar tied it up late in the game to ultimately force overtime.
Sam Gero had a hat trick and two assists for Madison, which snapped a two-game skid and improved to 5-7 overall with a 3-2 record in the Halvorsen. It currently holds second place with three divisional games remaining. Piechnik added two goals and an assist, while Lucas Gero dished out three assists in the win.
Bryan Worthington made 26 saves in the win.
Dylan Leonard scored twice for BSM, while Jimmy Hathaway also scored a goal. The tri-op is now 3-9-1 overall with a 2-3-0-1 record in the division, and currently holds the fourth and final Halvorsen Cup playoff spot.
