Jan. 8 notebook: Montville rallies, Pope John downs Morristown-Beard

MONTVILLE RALLIES PAST PARK IN THIRD PERIOD

Matt Trifari scored the game-winning goal with 3:06 left in the third period to lift Montville to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Park Regional in a Haas Division battle at Mennen Arena.

Thanks to two goals from Michael Capozzi and one from Chase Olszewski, Park Regional held a 3-2 advantage through two periods. But freshman Aidan Rankin scored with just over six minutes left to tie it up for the Mustangs, before Trifari tallied the game-winner.

Trifari finished with two goals and an assist, while Logan Engle had a goal and an assist. Nicolas Ponikowski dished out two assists in the win. Alexis Riley made 19 saves, and now stands just 20 saves away from 1,000 for her career. Trifari, on the other hand, is five points shy of 100 for his career.

Montville improved to 3-2 in the Haas Division and now has a four-point cushion for the third spot in the Haas Cup. It is also 5-5 overall.

Park Regional is now 5-5 overall and is now 1-3 in the division.

POPE JOHN SHUTS OUT MORRISTOWN-BEARD

Anthony Conetta stopped all 27 shots he faced to earn his third shutout of the year in leading Pope John to a 2-0 win over Morristown-Beard at Skylands Ice World.

Robbie Myshkoff scored a power play goal in the first period to open the scoring, before Luke Jarosiewicz scored in the second. Myshkoff finished with a goal and an assist and Matt Hughes had two assists.

Pope John won its second-straight game and is now 8-4 overall.

Mason Hriczov stopped 31 of 33 shots for Morristown-Beard, which fell to 4-4-1.

SPERLING GETS SECOND-STRAIGHT HAT TRICK IN MORRISTOWN-BEARD GIRLS WIN

Jessica Sperling recorded her second-straight hat trick in leading Morristown-Beard to a 6-0 win over Princeton Day at Twin Oaks Ice Rink.

It was the fifth-straight win for Morristown-Beard, which upped its record to 6-1 on the year. Julie Jasaitis had three assists, while Reid Snyder, Kailin Kane, and Keira Redmond each chipped in with a goal. Keira Walsifer dished out two assists.

Hannah Mortazavi stopped all 32 shots she faced- a career high- for her second shutout of the season.

WENZEL’S NATURAL HAT TRICK POWERS MOUNTAIN LAKES-BOONTON

A.J. Wenzel had a natural hat trick to lead Mountain Lakes-Boonton to a 4-2 win over West Orange at Skylands Ice World.

Mountain Lakes-Boonton trailed, 2-0 in the first period, before Scott Soukup and Wenzel scored before the end of the first to tie it up. Wenzel added the game-winner and the empty-net goal in the third period to finish off the natural hat trick and secure the win.

Jonathan Garibaldi and Lawson Fagan each had two assists for Mountain Lakes-Boonton, which is now 3-5 overall. Cody Roller made 14 saves in the win.
