Jan. 5 notebook: Park Regional edges Parsippany Regional on special night

PARK REGIONAL EDGES PARSIPPANY REGIONAL ON SPECIAL NIGHT

Thanks to a three-goal first period, Park Regional held on for a 3-2 win over Parsippany Regional in a crossover game at Mennen Arena.

The game was “Hockey Fights Cancer” night for Parsippany, which opted to honor recently-passed MCSSIHL broadcaster Bret Leuthner. Players on both teams used purple tape on their sticks for pancreatic cancer, and a ceremony was held before the game honoring Leuthner, who passed away on New Year’s Eve.

After Robert Hemenway gave Parsippany the lead 32 seconds in, Park struck for three goals- as Colin Mullooly, Michael Capozzi, and Matthew McDermott each scored to give it a commanding 3-1 lead.

Despite a 43-14 shot advantage for Park in the game, Parsippany kept it close thanks in large part to Andrew Nicholas’ 40-save effort. Kaden Bland scored with 8:26 left in the third to cut it to 3-2, but Parsippany was unable to finish off the comeback.

Capozzi had a goal and two assists for Park, which won its third game in a row and improved to 5-4 overall. Dylan Marion made 12 saves in the win, and Nick Monaco had two assists.

Parsippany is now 2-5.
