Dec. 20 notebook: Pastukh, Newton-Lenape Valley’s hot start continues

ANOTHER HAT TRICK FOR PASTUKH LIFTS NEWTON-LENAPE VALLEY

Through six games, Newton-Lenape Valley junior Maksym Pastukh already has four hat tricks. The latest came on Wednesday, when he had three goals and an assist in an impressive 6-1 win over Parsippany Regional at Mennen Arena.

Pastukh has an impressive 13 goals and two assists through just six games for Newton-Lenape Valley, which is 4-2 overall with a 3-0 mark in the Charette division. It took sole possession of first place with the win.

Brayden Dabrowski scored twice, while Justin Zappe had a goal and an assist as Newton-Lenape Valley handed Parsippany its first divisional loss of the year (2-1). Martin Murphy and Kayla Latham each dished out two assists. Ryan Salerno stopped 21 of 22 shots to earn the win.

Joseph Gasparro scored the lone goal of the game for Parsippany.

ENGLE SENDS MONTVILLE TO KEY HAAS WIN

Logan Engle scored a career-high of four goals to go along with two assists to lift Montville to an emphatic 8-4 win over Roxbury at Mennen Arena.

It was Montville’s first Haas division win since returning to the division after spending last season in the Charette division. It now holds a 1-1 divisional record, while Roxbury fell to 1-3 within the division.

Aidan Stepien recorded the first hat trick of his career, while also recording two assists.

Roxbury led, 3-2 early in the second period, before Matt Trifari, Stepien, and Engle (twice) all scored power play goals to give Montville a 6-3 lead. Trifari finished with a goal and two assists, while Alexis Riley made 20 saves.

Ryan VanZile and Michael Nelson each had a goal and an assist for Roxbury.

MORRISTOWN-BEARD GIRLS BLANK IMMACULATE HEART FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT WIN

Jessica Sperling had five points- one goal and four assists- in leading Morristown-Beard to its third-straight win, a 5-0 win over Immaculate Heart at Twin Oaks Ice Rink.

Reid Snyder had a goal and two assists, while Kailin Kane also scored for Morristown-Beard. Hannah Mortazavi stopped all 19 shots she faced to secure her first shutout of the season.

Morristown-Beard is now 4-1 with a 2-0 record in the Librera division.

MADISON GIRLS MATCH LAST SEASON’S WIN TOTAL

The Madison girls team improved to 2-1 on the season- matching last season’s win total- with a wild, 10-8 win over Princeton at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton.

In a back-and-forth game, Izzy Hunter scored the go-ahead goal with 1:36 left, before Brooke Gundlach buried an empty-netter in the final seconds to secure the win.

Freshman Leah Jobe finished with two goals and two assists. Gundlach, also a freshman, recorded two goals and an assist, with junior Maya Metzler picking up the first points of her career with a goal and an assist. Francesca Giglio, Athena Halewicz, Mae Hurley, and Mia McSherry also scored. Giglio and Hurley each scored their first career goals.

POPE JOHN FALLS TO ST. JOHN VIANNEY

In a rematch of last season’s Non-Public first round which was won by St. John Vianney, it was the Lancers who came through again on the road with a 3-1 win over Pope John at Skylands Ice World.

Despite a 34-21 shot advantage, Pope John fell behind 3-0 through two periods, and narrowly avoided a shutout as Declan Murphy scored on the power play with nine seconds left in the game. St. John Vianney goalie Brendan Allen stopped 33 of 34 shots to propel his team to the win.

Pope John fell to 3-3 and saw its two-game win streak snapped.

OLSZEWSKI STARS IN PARK REGIONAL LOSS

Chase Olszewski had his second-career four-goal game, as Park Regional fell, 7-5 to Nutley-Bloomfield-Columbia in the Essex Holiday Tournament at Codey Arena.

The sophomore finished with five points- four goals and an assist- as Park fell to 1-3 overall. Colin Mullooly also scored, while Michael Capozzi and Matthew McDermott each recorded two assists in the loss.

MADISON FALLS DESPITE GERO’S HAT TRICK

Sam Gero had a hat trick, but Madison saw a two-goal lead in the third period slip away in a 6-4 loss to Bridgewater-Raritan in the Essex Holiday Tournament at Codey Arena.

Jacob Thompson also scored for Madison, which gave up four unanswered goals after taking a two-goal lead. It fell to 1-4 overall, while Bridgewater-Raritan remained undefeated at 5-0.

RANDOLPH GIRLS SHUT OUT BY PRINCETON DAY

Randolph’s girls team suffered its first loss of the season, as it fell, 4-0 to Princeton Day at SportsCare Arena.

Goalie Stephanie Xhumba stopped 45 of 49 shots as Randolph was out-shot, 49-10. Randolph is now 1-1 on the season.
